Agrupar & Con Quito Project, Ecuador

Location & Field Conditions:
Quito is the capital city of Ecuador in northwestern South America. It is located in northern Ecuador (see NG MapMachine satellite map) in the Guayllabamba river basin on the eastern slopes of the Pichincha (4794 m), an active stratovolcano in the Andes mountains. This is a high altitude, urban project (3,000 to 3,400 m) in the inner city and disadvantaged residential quarters of Quito.

Nearest town: Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

Background: This project takes small parcels of wasteland and turns them into micro-greenhouses, orchards and guinea pig pens, all of which produce organic food.

Over the past two decades many satellite communities have sprung in the periphery of Quito, inhabited by immigrants from the surrounding Andean countryside. Most come to the big city in search of a better life: Others are allured by the illusive promise of the bright lights. Many have had to abandon their subsistence farms due to the degradation of soil quality and the corresponding decline in food production. Malnutrition is rife in these communities and some families literally reach starvation point before making the decision to leave their homes. Life in the city in only marginally better: Jobs are hard to come by; family income is often less than a dollar a day (that’s about 60p) and just feeding a family is an overwhelming struggle.

The VentureCo Trust, in partnership with the municipality of Quito, have initiated this programme of “Urban Agriculture” to enable the people to help themselves. “Farming in the city” provides communities with the means to produce the basic ingredients of a low-cost but healthy diet, as well as the occasional surplus to sell.

Project aims: To improve the living standard of the most vulnerable communities of Quito through agricultural activities. The organic food produced means that:-

  • Diet, and hence health, improve.
  • Self-employment opportunities are created.
  • Income is generated by trading / selling surplus produce.
  • The spirit of entrepreneurship foments amongst the most vulnerable parts of society.
