The Book Bus
Project - Community Development Work In Zambia.
Aims and Objectives
of the Project
Our aim is to share with children the pleasure and value that
books can bring. In addition to story-telling, our crew of writers, artists
and musicians will encourage the children to paint and to make music.
By associating reading with enjoyment and creativity, we hope to sow the
seeds of a life-long love of books.
The Book Bus Foundation is a UK Registered Charity.
A week in the
life of the Book Bus
The Book Bus follows a predetermined route through Zambia visiting
selected schools, orphanages and hospitals for a week at a time. The Book
Bus travels at weekends and is static at a selected site during the week.
The Book Bus is staffed by the Project Leader, the Driver, a local story
teller and four Book Bus "Crew Members". On arrival at the site,
the Crew Members strike camp, setting up tents, kitchen and the onboard
library display. There will be a schedule of activities for the children
to engage in during the week; these activities can include storytelling,
reading, art, drama sessions and a sports day. Activities may vary from
site to site. The week will end with a display of works and a donation
of books. On Friday afternoon we break camp and move on. Such is life
on the road.
How do I join
the project?
The Book Bus needs four enthusiastic and active Crew Members with some
measure of artistic talent and the ability to interact with children.
Whether you're travelling independently around Africa or you're looking
for a working-holiday with a difference, this project-based visit to Zambia
will provide a unique travel experience. The cost of joining the Book
Bus as a Crew member directly funds the running of The Book Bus in Africa.
You can join the project for as short as two weeks, or see it through
to the end of an eight week programme. You can travel with VentureCo from
the UK or independent travellers can join us in Lusaka and transfer to
the Book Bus location.

What will I be doing?
The Book Bus is a self-supporting mobile library.
As a crew member you will have tasks to do at
each location that the Book Bus visits:
There will be practical tasks such as striking camp
(ie pitching tents, setting up our on board
kitchen and helping to prepare meals.)
You will be fully involved in running the week's activities,
this requires participation with the children through reading,
storytelling, art and sport.
You may be working in remote bush conditions with few facilities.
It may be hot or muddy or both.
Your role in making the project work
As you can see, VentureCo projects provide direct aid to worthy causes
in many parts of the developing world. So where do the Crew Members fit
in to all of this? There's no doubt that it's the hard work, dedication
and teamwork from the Crew that gets each project started: every Crew
Member plays a vital role in making the project a success. We find that
within every group there are a wide range of skills and talents that can be
drawn upon at different stages to complete the project. For example, interpersonal
skills that help the group "bond" and form an effective team;
practical skills such as language, the use of basic hand-tools and the
ability to provide a decent meal from "challenging" ingredients,
all help to make the project team efficient and self-sustaining. Crew
Members with a talent for art, music or sport make all the difference
during project "down-time" (especially at our remote sites!)
and a positive approach fired by the desire to help others will provide
the motivation to keep the group on track throughout the project.
