Only 32 km wide at its narrowest and 100 km at its broadest, the Caprivi extends eastward for 450 km, roughly from the Okavango River to the Zambezi. With an area of 20 000 km², equal to 2,4% of Namibia, it lies about midway between the equator and the southern tip of Africa, as well as midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian. In combination with the highest rainfall in Namibia, 500-700 mm per year, the rivers give large parts of the Caprivi a tropical character. Open water and flood plains with palm trees, reeds and papyrus cover about a fifth of the area. Woodlands on the riverbanks and elsewhere largely hold broadleaved trees. Thorn trees are scarce. Four river parks are situated in the Caprivi, the Mahango Game Reserve
(245 km²) on the Okavango, the Mudumu National Park (1 000 km²)
and Bwabwata East National Park in the Kwando swamps and the Mamili National
Park (320 km²) on the Linyanti. The proposed Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier
Park will encompass this area, making it the worlds largest game park
Where will I be staying? Your home for the duration of your experience will be at Caprivi Bush Experiences' camp on the banks of the beautiful Kwando River, opposite Bwabwata National Park (previously called Caprivi Game Park), and inside Mayuni Conservancy, seven kilometres south of Kongola. The camp is located here because of the rich wildlife and unique birdlife in the immediate vicinity, and of course access to the beautiful Kwando River that divides Namibia and Botswana. During your time in the Caprivi region, you will sleep in comfortable twin canvas safari tents, with beds, clean linen and comfortable duvets. Clean rustic ablutions are all part of the African experience. You can help cook dinner in the evening over the open coals. The fixed buildings are made from locally available materials such as
reeds and thatching grass, and are built by the people from the local
communities, so this also helps to promote tourism and generate income
in the Caprivi region.
Our host community: The camp is operated as a joint venture between the local communities and Caprivi Bush Experiences, in order to promote sustainable conservation in the region. All accommodation revenue is shared with the communities, who use the funds to manage their wilderness conservancy. The camp is managed and staffed by Erik, Richard and Loureen who were
all born and raised in the local communities near the camp, and are doing
an excellent job.
Languages: The local languages include Siphwe and Lozi, and you will have a chance to learn a little while you are there!
