Belize - a beautiful setting for project work on the Fireburn reserve.Aztec Maya Phase 2:
Working on Conservation and Environmental Education projects in the Fireburn Reserve, Belize (weeks 4, 5 & 6).

Total Time: Four Weeks

VentureCo Projects in Belize are based around providing and upgrading the infrastructure within the Fireburn Reserve on the coast of Belize. Facilities we provide are used for research, school visits and animal rehabilitation. This conservation initiative is in support of "Wildtracks", an organisation who maintain a permanent presence in the area to ensure a continuous programme of conservation and development. All projects are funded from The VentureCo Trust.

The Wildtracks Organisation

The Manatees (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus). Wildtracks has an active interest in conservation, from providing care for Belize's orphan manatee to working towards the establishment of the Fireburn Reserve as a protected area. It also acts as a facilitator for communities wishing to become involved in conservation initiatives such as the Meso-American Biological Corridors and Climate Change programmes. On the ground, Wildtracks researchers are creating flora and fauna species maps of the Fireburn Reserve. Studies are also starting to focus on radio tracking of the Fer-de-Lance, one of Belize's venomous snakes, a technology that has developed from radio-tracking manatees.

Wildtracks Outreach Programme

The Wildtracks outreach programme is directed principally towards the local children of Sarteneja village. Wildtracks has been working successfully with young people, emphasising the need for knowledge and understanding of the environment, as well as the need for careful, sustainable use of natural products and the problems of biodiversity loss; this is tackled by an active Environmental Education Programme at upper primary level in local schools. Through the programme, outdoor activities and field courses expand on the school science syllabus giving children an adventurous introduction to their local environment and providing them with new insights into the natural world.

Venturers need to come prepared to get their hands (extremely) dirty and to learn to like living in basic (but pristine) jungle conditions. Accommodation is in a self-contained jungle Base Camp where all camp chores are carried out by the group, your culinary and house keeping skills will be put to the test too! Work is largely manual involving light building work and the use of shovels, bars and hand tools, local craftsmen will provide skilled labour on the project.

Wildlife is in abundance on the reserve, such as the Green Vine Snake, which is venomous but not overly harmful to humans.Beneficiaries

  • The local community through direct employment in the reserve and through protection of their local environment.
  • Visiting school children through environmental education
  • Scientists and biologists who come to study the reserve
  • The wildlife in the reserve and in surrounding areas
  • The environment

Your role in making the project work

It's the hard work, dedication and teamwork from Venture groups that gets each project started: every Venturer plays a vital role in making the project a success. We find that within every group are a wide range of skills and talents that can be drawn upon at different stages to complete the project. For example, interpersonal skills that help the group "bond" and form an effective team; practical skills such as language, the use of basic hand-tools and the ability to provide a decent meal from "challenging" ingredients, all help to make the project team efficient and self-sustaining. Venturers with a talent for art, music or sport make all the difference during project "down-time" (especially at our remote sites!) and a positive approach fired by the desire to help others will provide the motivation to keep the group on track throughout the project.

Project Funding

Funding for the development project comes directly from the VentureCo Trust. For each person that joins a Venture, we as a company, donate $400 to the Trust. 100% of the money, that is every penny, the Trust receives is spent on projects. VentureCo the company, takes care of the staffing and admin’ costs. To date, the Trust has funded 63 development projects around the world.
