Ecuador Volcano Treks: Volcano Trek - Cayambe

Duration: 2 days

Volcano Trek - Cayambe
Ecuador

The Cayambe is the only volcano in the world with a summit crossed by the equator. As the third highest peak in Ecuador, Cayambe was first conquered in 1880 by Edward Whymper and the Carrel brothers. However, it is most renowned for having the largest and arguably the most beautiful glaciers in Ecuador. For adrenaline junkies these huge ice plateaus also offer skiing opportunities at 5.500 m. This mountain belongs to the National park Cayambe-Coca. Due to its technical difficulty, it is less visited than other mountains, despite its close proximity to Quito. For those who do reach the summit the experience and views will be memories for a lifetime.

Day 01: Quito - Cayambe
You will be picked up from your hotel in Quito and driven along the Panamerica highway to the North, until you reach the town of Cayambe. From here you pass the Hacienda Piemonte. Finally you reach the hut, which is situated at an altitude of 4.600 m. In the afternoon you will go for a walk with the guide to discover the best route. If you are lucky, you will see some condors gliding with elegance in the sky. Slowly you will also get used to the altitude. Return to the hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 02: Climbing Cayambe Volcano - Quito
You will have to wake up at midnight to get ready for the climb. If the weather conditions are good, you will reach the peak in about 6-7 hours. The breathtaking glaciers lie exactly on the equator, which is unique in the world. You will also remember the superb view for your lifetime. Even the return (about 3 hours) over snowfields to the hut will be a nice experience. In the afternoon we return to Quito
