3 phases make 1 Venture

The project phase is the “giving back” element of the Venture; it's at the heart of VentureCo’s ethos. It’s your opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause, whilst learning about another culture. As well as helping others, the project phase is a time to learn and practice new skills; it requires initiative and dedication and is proof positive of what you and your team are capable of achieving. Above all, the project phase is immensely rewarding and a lot of fun!

But why volunteer in the first place? Choosing to be a volunteer is a personal decision, but for many people it provides real purpose and focus for their travels. It’s a unique opportunity to see a country from the inside out, something that isn’t possible for most travellers. There’s no doubt that sixteen people working together achieve a great deal more than sixteen individuals could ever dream of!

Volunteering with VentureCo is a unique experience; you and your team will be challenged by your new environment and involved with topics and concerns that don’t exist in day-to-day life at home. Because you’re part of a team you’ll have the necessary clout to make a small-scale, local development project a reality. When you complete your project, you’ll gain a new perspective on the world and have the satisfaction of leaving a positive and lasting impression on the local community. Working in harmony:
In Latin America, India, East Africa and Cambodia we work in partnership with local non-government organisation (NGO’s) to support communities by contributing funds and an enthusiastic labour force to both community and environmental development projects. In every case, VentureCo teams provide that critical boost, the “making it happen catalyst,” that means a local initiative succeeds.

Our development projects are carefully chosen for content that matches a local need with the talents and abilities of our teams. Whatever talents you possess, be it arts, music, sport and a whole range of other skills, you can be sure that there will be an opportunity to apply them within the scope of your project. Generally, the conservation projects are of a practical nature and involve plenty of physical outdoor work. The community projects involve working with the disadvantaged to improve the quality of family life, especially for the children.

Communication:
Lying at the heart of development projects is communication: everyone needs to know what the project plan is and to commit to it 100%. You will have to discus how you want to organise yourselves, how you will manage the project and how plan to reach a successful conclusion. You will also need to communicate with the project manager. At a very practical level, the project manager may appear to understand you, but his mother tongue isn’t English, so is what he’s understanding, the same thing as you’re meaning!?

Communication is also crucial with community members: do the village elders know why you’re there? Do the teachers support your plans? Or maybe your project takes you to a remote National Park: do the rangers know what the plan is? How will you communicate with them? Other projects may take you into contact with young schoolchildren or homeless street kids, how will you communicate with them to ensure your plan is harmonious with their expectations? What happens if their first language is a tribal tongue, and they have only just started learning a European language, let alone English!? Can you use story-boards? Perhaps you could find a translator?

And finally ……
The work can be hard, you’ll probably be doing things that you never thought that you would do. But the sense of achievement on completing the project is immeasurable and your contribution will be appreciated by all connected to the project.

Self-motivation, persistence and avoiding procrastination are three virtues that will take on new significance when you join a VentureCo development project.
