Project background
Providing hope for the future
"Hisani" is Swahili for "kindness." Hisani in Tanzania
is an NGO whose main focus is the support of orphaned children in the
Mwanza Region. These children are forced onto the streets, where they
collect rotten food and beg to survive. On the streets, they no longer
possess the right to be treated when they are sick, to obtain an education,
or of sleeping under a roof on a full stomach. Hisani provides orphans
and street children with these basic rights. At the orphanage, children
are taught how to read, write, garden, work with wood, and play sports.
They are given a chance of a better life!
Education, education, education
The orphanage currently supports 90 boys and girls between the ages of
2 and 16. Of these, 38 live at the orphanage, and the rest live with grandparents
or other people in the local community who are willing to provide them
with shelter. International volunteers teach classes in English, mathematics,
social studies and science. As a result of these classes, the children
score better in their national examinations than their peers. Hisani hopes
to put an end to the poverty cycle by seeing that all of its children
attend secondary school or vocational training.
Helping Improve Educational Standards
The project has two primary aims:
1. To construct an additional dormitory to accommodate the girls and boys
in separate rooms
2. To assist school staff in organising classes and activities for the
kids
VentureCo promotes Joint-ventures
This project has 2 partners:
HISANI that supports the project with its technical and logistic assistance.
VentureCo who support with the material and participation of Venturers.
Project Tasks
1. Construction a dormitory building large enough to accommodate up to
30 children.
2. Interact with school staff and kids in day-to-day running of the orphanage
3. Apply any talent you have to the project programme
Swahili
The main spoken language in Tanzania is Swahili. There will be plenty
of opportunities to practice the language. Venturers should meet and greet
local people in Swahili whenever possible
