“The travel safety course was essential and really helped me understand what I was letting myself in for.”
The 3-day Travel Safety Course is held over a weekend about 6 weeks before you set off on your Venture. During the course you’ll get to know the other members of your team as we prepare you for all aspects of travel to the developing world. This is an active weekend with indoor and outdoor elements. The VentureCo training team will provide detailed information about your Venture backed up by seminars to discuss topics such as travel documentation, health considerations and your flight plans. There will also be practical sessions about personal safety and equipment selection; expect a few surprises as well! We’ll start with the basic admin details concerning your passport, any visa requirements and your travel insurance. Your health whilst overseas is of prime importance and we’ll provide up to date information sheets about health, vaccination requirements and malaria prophylaxis. Of equal importance is maintaining your health and hygiene overseas and our team of experts will be on hand with plenty of tips from their own experience in the field. We’ll advise you on personal clothing and equipment, what to bring, what to leave behind and where to buy good quality gear, at the best discounts. There will be a full set of the gear that we recommend for the Venture, which is useful if you’re starting from scratch. If you’re planning to travel independently after the Venture you’ll be able to discuss travel options with our well travelled staff. We’ll give you as much information that we can about where to go, when to go and what to do when you’re there. Living and travelling in unfamiliar territory can seem a daunting and even unsafe prospect. Yet you can reduce the risks of travel by learning from the experience of those who have gone there before you. Our staff will cover travel security and how to avoid undesired “incidents”, we consider personal security threats, how to prevent thefts and will give practical security advice. We’ll spend one full day outdoors. We conduct a “real time” Search and Rescue exercise which provides team-working as well as practical skills. We are then prepared to take to the hills and our day hike acts as a mobile classroom where you’ll have a chance to practice your navigation skills, pick up tips on good trekking technique and have an opportunity to learn more about outdoor kit such as technical clothing, layering systems and hydration equipment. Saturday night is a social evening in the local pub which, along with a series of ice-breaking games and team challenges, will see the group come together and start to gel as a team. During the weekend you’ll be given a copy of the “Venture Field Manual”. This is one of our in-house publications that is a practical guide to your Venture. It is designed to be taken with you on your travels and summarises the information that is essential to an enjoyable and rewarding travel experience. At the end of the course you should be confident about the prospect of travelling overseas and have a clear idea about what preparations you need to do before departure. To maintain contact with your group we will give you the passwords for the Venture Forum, which is a secure zone on this website. You’ll find a chatroom for your group to discuss such topics as equipment selection, onward travel options and making plans to meet up. VentureCo’s office staff has literally decades of travel experience in remote and challenging destinations from Algiers to Zanzibar and all the letters in between! The pre-departure training course is a distillation of this experience that we are eager to share with you. This course is an integral part of your Venture and all food, accommodation, equipment and training is included. There is no additional charge for the course.
