Cake, Chocolate and the Coast

So with school waiting for us when we returned to Quito it was another week of hard study for the team and mention of irregular verbs was enough to send the group scurrying from their books! A welcome break (for some) came in the form of a suprise party for me thrown by the group and profesores. The cake was great; some of the Ecuadorian birthday customs less so - details omitted to protect the innocent. We also had a very interesting trip to the Mitad Del Mundo, where we experimented with the strange occurences in the 'middle of the world'.
After a sad farewell to our spanish tutors, we headed east, to the edge of the jungle to try our hand at rafting, in Tena, the whitewater mecca of Ecuador. Everybody had a great time and as an added bonus we happened to hit a chocolate festival in the evening. Unfortunately most of the stalls had been taken down, but the 'Miss Chocolate 2009' competition made up for it.
A short hop back to Quito, and a very long journey west, and here we are in Puerto Lopez ready to get down to some hard graft with some repairs to the buildings of a local school...luckily we have a picture perfect beach to relax on afterwards. Bliss!
