Weeks 1 & 2Our cultural orientation takes place in Northern Tanzania, a region that embodies what for many is quintessential Africa. East Africa is home to a vast array of landscapes: snow-capped mountains, lush savanna, national parks packed with wildlife, deserted sandy beaches, huge lakes and arid deserts. The one thing that unites this region is its lingua franca: Swahili. The first step for any newcomer to Tanzania is to learn a little of this remarkable language. A heady mix of Bantu, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, English and Portuguese, learning only a few phrases makes a huge difference when we travel from the main towns. Unasema Kiswahili?
Our fortnight in Moshi also allows us to ease into the African way of life, whilst taking part in the Mpingo Community Development Project. Moshi is a lively town in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. It is home to the Chagga people ad provides an easy introduction to Tanzania. By the end of week 2, when we leave the Mpingo project, you will be fully accustomed to the African weather, food, transport, language and pace of life.
