The Amigos Language School, in Cusco, Peru

The Amigos Language School: Cusco, Peru
(Weeks 1 and 2)

Colonial mansions and churches built on massive Inca foundations, colourful markets and a lively night life: welcome to Cusco, high in the Andes and the setting for our intensive Spanish course. To complement the “full immersion” approach to learning, accommodation is with Spanish-speaking families in the centre of town, guaranteed to stimulate your language skills! At weekends we explore the surrounding Inca temples and fortresses by foot, on horseback or mountain bike.

The Amigos School is a not-for-profit organisation established to teach Spanish to visitors and teach English to local street children. The fees we pay to the school subsidise the local children’s English lessons. In the mornings we split into small groups each with its own language teacher. The afternoons are free to join Amigos street children project. This gives you a great chance to try out your Spanish on the kids, whilst helping them to learn English – a crucial skill that will help their employment opportunities in the future.

There is also plenty of time to visit Cusco’s museums and galleries, marvel at the town’s remarkable Inca stonework and check out its many cafés, shops and parks. In the evenings it’s time to hit the salsa clubs and bars. You’ll be amazed how much Spanish you can remember when you need to order a beer!

We make a trip to the nearby Sacred Valley of the Incas with the lofty fortresses at Pisac and Ollantaytambo guarding its approach . The Inca ceremonial site Sacsayhuaman (pronounced “sexy-woman”) with its perfect walls made from 130 tonne stone blocks is a “must-see”. As is the amphitheatre Qenqo with its hollowed-out stone altar and zigzag channels to drain away the sacrificial blood! Nice!

Throughout this phase of the Venture we stay with Spanish-speaking local families. You can choose whether to stay on your own, or with a couple of other Venturers; either way your new family will be eager for you to practice your Spanish on them! Living with a family is also the perfect way to discover more about modern Inca culture.

Spanish Language School: Pucon, Chile (Week 9)

This Spanish refresher course in the 9th week of the Venture is a great opportunity to “top-up” your language skills. Whether your grammar’s gone rusty or you’re bursting to perfect your tenses, this week of tuition will build on your existing skills and set you up for the next level.

Pucon is hard to beat as an adventure activity centre and the town attracts a young and fun loving crowd. It sits in the heart of the Chilean Lake District where the crystal-clear water of lake Villarica lap against its black volcanic beaches, and Villarica Volcano looms above as a menacing backdrop.

Spanish classes are held in the morning with afternoons free to take part in the many activities on offer or simply head to the beach to practice your language skills with the local chicas and chicos! We’ll keep an eye on the climbing conditions and when the weather favourable, we’ll make a bid for the summit of the volcano. The nearby Rio Trancura offers excellent grade 3 whitewater rafting and you can try kayaking the rapids too. Mountain biking and horse riding are other options. By the time we leave we’ll be physically and mentally tuned for our expedition to Patagonia.
