The Poroto Project
in Tanzania - living with the communities and helping the schools
Project
Overview
You will be part of a team based near Tukuyu, Mbeya in the beautiful Poroto
Mountains of Tanzania. Here you will be involved on a project in the local
primary schools. The last week will be spent relaxing on the sandy banks
of Lake Nyasa. By the end of the five weeks you will have completed a
community project, met some great people, learnt about a wonderful new
culture and experienced the incredible scenery of Tanzania.
Mbeya Background
Tukuyu is the capital Rungwe district and is part of Mbeya area in south
west Tanzania. This is one of the greenest parts of the country, with
rolling hills covered in green tea bushes and lush valleys offering fertile
soils for crops. Being on the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, the
area has many volcanic mountains, crater lakes and undiscovered wildlife.
Breathtaking landscapes are complimented by the interesting culture and
history of the local Nyakyusa tribe, one of the biggest tribes in Tanzania.
'By living within the community and helping at the
local schools you really feel you are part of the whole community's effort
to improve their schools'
Anna - Mbeya Project Leader 2007
The Project:
Each week you will be located in a different primary school within
the village. The mornings will be spent making educational displays with
the children and the afternoons will be spent playing sport with the children.
With one other volunteer you will live with local families, providing
you with the opportunity to learn all about the Tanzanian culture.
Where do we stay?
From Sunday night to Thursday night you stay with your host family. On
Friday and Saturday nights you will stay in hostels.
The Last Week:
Matema on Lake Nyasa: You will spend a few days at the end of the project
relaxing on the sandy banks of Lake Nyasa. Even though this is a lake
it is so vast that it looks like the sea and you can swim in the waves.
You will be staying in little huts on the beach with a view of the stunning
mountain scenery. Small fishing canoes can be hired to take you along
the shore and there is a tiny village with a bar and a cafe.
Food:
Will be provided by the host families and will be their traditional cuisine.
At the weekend you will visit local cafes.
Please go to the project information page for a
break down of what you can expect to be doing during your stay in Tanzania.
