travel > Welcome to ventureCo Ventures

“Travelling with VentureCo is a unique experience, their blend of charity, adventure and local participation sets a standard that all travellers should aspire to”

About VentureCo

VentureCo was founded in 1999 on the belief that those who seek adventure whilst travelling overseas should also seek an awareness and understanding of the countries that they are visiting. To satisfy this belief, VentureCo’s founders, David Gordon and Mark Davison, established a Venture programme to take small groups of Venturers abroad to live the culture, complete local Development Projects and undertake adventurous expeditions. These “Living, Working and Travelling” phases are the basis of all our Ventures which journey worldwide to explore Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Three Phases Make One Venture

The first phase of the Venture is an introduction to the host community’s language, culture and background. This is also a great opportunity to acclimatise to a different climate and perhaps a higher altitude than you’re accustomed to. Possessing a new language skill, an understanding of the host community and a sympathy for needing the project, you are much better equipped to contribute to the project (Phase 2).

The second phase development project is at the heart of your travel experience; your participation is instrumental in making something special happen. The relationships that you develop working with local people will demonstrate the realities of local life at grassroots level in the Developing World, it’s a fascinating and very different world to that of the mainstream tourist and backpacker. Having gained this in-sight, you will have a new vantage point, a new perspective, from which to compare your world with the one through which you’re travelling. Now’s the time for the expedition (Phase 3).

The expedition is a combination of treks, tracks and travels. You will visit major cities and remote hamlets; famous Unesco Sites and hidden not-in-the-guidebook treasures; you’ll make tracks through deserts, jungles and mountain ranges; you’ll travel by mountain bike, on foot, in jeeps, planes, trains and rickety rickshaws; some expeditions have camel treks, elephant-back tiger safaris or riding trails; we visit habitats that range from glaciers to the world’s driest desert and from Amazon jungle to arid mountain plateaux. In a word, variety: the jaw-dropping variation of the natural world. Add in the tapestry of human communities and the way they have woven their lives into their environment, and you have a unique, complete, in-depth travel experience.

Gap Years for All

VentureCo for Gap Year excellence
Every year VentureCo send groups of 16 Gap Year “Venturers” to Latin America, Africa and Asia. Our Ventures provide opportunities for you to explore and broaden your talents and potential whilst learning the skills of teamwork and leadership. As well as advancing your personal development, you’ll find that you come home with a better understanding and awareness of the developing world. Not only that, you’ll be sharing your experiences and understandings with your fellow Venturers and forming friendships that will last for life.

VentureCo and the Career Break Generation
Year Out initiatives aren’t confined solely to school leavers - just because you didn’t take a Gap Year when you left school doesn’t mean it’s too late to take time out now. Perhaps you’re nearing graduation and are looking forward to a well-earned break or maybe you’re considering taking a sabbatical from your present job. Either way, a career break could be a good move: more and more employers are now placing greater emphasis on recruiting staff with the life skills and independence of mind gained from experiencing life beyond the mainstream.

VentureCo’s Summer of Venture Holidays
If you are looking for a summer break that is different, worthwhile and challenging then consider joining one of our Summer Ventures that take place between May and October each year. These Ventures are between 2 and 6 weeks duration and follow our unique three-phase approach.

VentureCo and Adventure Volunteering
Our Project-only Ventures in the Galapagos Islands support the on-going efforts to protect this unique and famous biodiversity hotspot. Working in support of the Charles Darwin Research Station, the project aims to balance human needs with the islands’ delicate ecosystem.
