The pan itself is a fossilized lakebed about 40 Km². The country here is grassland, but nothing like a Devon pasture – this grass is as tough as old boots and resembles the grass species found on sand dunes, but is nonetheless palatable to the local grazers. There are small coppices of acacia and mopane trees that provide valuable shade. This habitat is ideal for springbok and following the rains (Dec, Jan and Feb) elephant, eland and the larger herbivores (greater kudu and red hartebeest included) migrate into the area. It’s not uncommon to see herds of giraffe consisting of 30 individuals. Zebra congregate here to foal (Jan and Feb) in their thousands, which in turn leads to exciting predator action with spotted and the elusive brown hyenas following close behind, accompanied by the endangered hunting dogs.
There is no off-road or night driving allowed because Nxai Pan is a national park; this habitat is particularly fragile and vehicle tracks left in the desert can persist for 30 years (Jeremy Clarkson please note).
