Mumbo Island Camp
The island is 10km north-west of Cape Maclear which is the nearest point of road access and where the reception bureau is. Mumbo itself consists of five twin “canvas cottages” (tents is too disparaging!) Each one is perched on a huge boulder high above the water and shaded by lush Myombo foliage; each one has a bucket shower, ‘eco-loo’ and wooden deck overlooking the lake. Most important of all, each one has a hammock – just perfect for warm afternoons, catching the breeze.
There is one twin-tented family unit, tucked into the forest near the main beach. There is a dining area, bar and water sport gazebo built of timber and thatch. Activities include snorkelling, diving, swimming, kayaking, and bird watching. There are a couple of trails that lead into the interior of the island and on to the north shore where you can enjoy the Robinson Crusoe moment! It’s also really enjoyable to take a canoe (single or twin) and paddle around the circumference. Best of all, just take it easy on the private beach and relax in your hammock.
