Land of Stars Lodge, Marrakech Desert

Land of the Stars Lodge, D’Agafay Desert

Terre des etoiles at night

Terre des etoiles at night

An hour’s drive outside Marrakech the land morphs into the Agafay Desert with the Atlas Mountains 100 Km away in the background. This is a land of sand and rock but at night the star-scape has to be seen to be believed, particularly when the distant Atlas Mountains are snow-capped.

This is an area between Marrakech and Essaouira (down on the coast) that most people rush through – the only regular visitors we saw were herds of goats! The wadis and undulating land conceal the hidden gem that is the lodge camp “Terre des Étoiles”. Traditional Berber food is prepared from their own organic garden (irrigated!) and they provide an uncomplicated way of life, surrounded by the natural beauty of Agafay.

Double tent

Double tent

There are ten traditional Berber nomad tents; 30 m² each, carpeted and each one en suite. They resemble the luxury safari tents that you usually encounter on good safaris in East and Southern Africa, the Meru-style safari tents. All are lined with thick wool inner walls to make them really cozy.

They have created a kitchen garden that produces much of the veg used by the cooks and the farm also homes camels, donkeys and even a warren of rabbits! If you’re keen on photography or painting, this is an ideal base.

Activities

A great base to explore the land beyond Marrakech: walking, camel trekking (Dromedary not Bactrian) mountain bikes and horses are all available on site. More exotic pass times such as hot-air ballooning can also be arranged (with notice). But best of all is to be peaceful and soak in the desert beauty.

Yoga and Meditation

The lodge regularly organises yoga and meditation classes but please check with us to confirm dates.
