Maasai Mara and the Mountain Gorillas - Overland Trek
This is the best value trip to explore the highlights of Kenya and visit the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda.
Explore itinerary"The Kingdom of Uganda is a fairy-tale. You climb up a railway instead of a beanstalk, and at the end there is a wonderful new world. The scenery is different, the vegetation is different, the climate is different, and most of all, the people are different from anything elsewhere to be seen in the whole range of Africa…"
Winston Churchill, My African Journey, 1907
Churchill’s words aren’t quite spot-on these days: the railway only carries freight. But everything else he said IS spot-on. Uganda contains a wealth of natural glory: the national parks have recovered so well since the horror-story of the 1980’s, the conservation initiatives such as N’gamba and Bwindi are world-class and, for the adrenaline junky, the whitewater rafting below Owens Falls on the White Nile is quite as good as the best that the Zambezi has to offer!
Uganda is most famous for the Mountain Gorillas who live in the far southwest of the country, tight against the Rwanda boarder in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Mountain Gorillas live in family groups of about a dozen-or-so individuals and several gorilla families are now 'habituated' meaning that they tollerate human visitores. Gorilla treks are carefully controlled and human visitors are only allowed to spend an hour per day with the gorillas. A gorilla safari is a life-changing experience and a wonderful addition to a Big Game safari.
