The Bushtracks Express, Victoria Falls

The train reaches the middle of Brunel’s bridge, mid-way between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The Bushtracks Express is a vintage steam train that runs at Victoria Falls. It operates on the Zimbabwe side of the falls, and takes you to the centre of Brunel’s bridge for a unique photo opportunity of the Falls, bridge and train. The train consists of three carriages, beautifully restored by Rovos Rail, pulled by a 14a class Locomotive 512. The carriages are fully air-conditioned

The Royal Livingstone Express operates from the Livingstone side of The Victoria Falls in Zambia.

Train description

Loco 512 is a 14a Class built in 1952 by Beyer Peacock in England and was in service from 24th
November 1952 to 1994. The locomotive has been restored to full working order

The Club Car – Carriage No. 14661 houses the small lounge and bar as well as the kitchen. This can be used as a pre-dinner drinks venue for 10 to 12 guests.

The Dining Car – Carriage No. 197 is the sister to the famous Wembley Dining Car, which was built
in 1923 and forms part of The Royal Livingstone Express. No. 197 has the original fans and the 7 x
4 and 8 x 2 table configuration.

The Observation Car – Carriage No 225 houses a bar and veranda viewing deck.

Scheduled Departures

The Bushtracks Express has a scheduled departure every Tuesday & Friday. These are guaranteed departures for 2 or more people.

Outside the Scheduled Tuesday and Friday trip the train may be chartered for 35 or more persons, on any day of the week, excluding Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

The Observation Carriage

The timings.

Pick up during summer at 17:00 hrs. Winter time 16:00 hrs. Guests will be picked up from their hotels by the luxury Bushtracks vehicle and transferred by road to Victoria Falls Station. A safety brief will be given by the Bushtracks guide en-route to the station. Tickets will be issued to all guests. On arrival at the station, a welcome drink will be offered by The Victoria Falls Hotel. A red carpet will lead guests to The Bushtracks Express and the locomotive will be ‘in steam’: the perfect photographic opportunity.

The train will depart summer time at 17:30 hrs and winter time 17:00 hrs from the Victoria Falls Station and steam its way through the Victoria Falls Game Park to the border. It pauses at the border so a “General declaration” can be given to the immigration authorities and then continues onto the bridge. The train arrives at the centre of the bridge at around 18:15 in summer or 17:45 hrs in winter, depending on the game that has been viewed en route. Guests may alight from the train for some tremendous photo opportunities of The Victoria Falls, the Bushtracks Express and the sunset. The train then returns to the station arriving at 19:30 hrs in summer or 19:00 hrs in winter.
