Horse ride northern lights Iceland
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Keflavík Airport and catch the “Flybus” to the BSÍ bus station in Reykjavik. There you will be greeted around 17:30–18:00 by our driver who will take you to our farm. The day ends with dinner at farm’s private guesthouse.
Day 2 – Meadows, Mountains & Winter Warmth
After breakfast meet your guide in the indoor school. You will need winter riding gear, but if you’re missing anything we can provide it. Trial ride to match horse to rider and a couple of turns around the paddock, then off into the countryside!
Today we ride 4 ½ hours: follow the soft trails that lead through meadows; this is a great opportunity to get familiar with the special gait of the Icelandic horse, the “tölt”. Continue along the riverbank towards the volcanic mountains Reykjafjall riding between the ocean and volcano. Back at the farm we warm up with light lunch before we choose horses for the afternoon ride. A short ride then swap horse for Jeep and drive to the thermal swimming pool. Soften up in warm geothermal water, relax in the steam sauna and take a swim in the warm outdoor pool, sometimes with snow falling on your head! Afterwards, coffee and home baked cake will be served in the cozy environment of the hotel. We check the Northern Lights forecast and if favourable, and the sky is clear, we look out for the lights at the farm or go on a hunt!
Day 3 – Horses and Hot Springs; Hike into Reykjadalur Valley
After breakfast ride across the slopes of Reykjafjall Mountain and through a forest, passing many colourful geothermal hot springs. We visit a neighbour’s farm for a hot drink and a bite, and learn more about the Icelandic horse, before riding back to our farm for lunch.
A short drive takes us to the roadhead and access point for a walk into the magnificent geothermal valley of Reykjadalur. We pass the ice-filled Djúpagilsfoss waterfall and many colourful hot springs. You also have the opportunity to take a relaxing bath in a warm river, an unforgettable experience (Bracing when you get out!). Stunning views on the return walk with snow-capped volcanoes all around and the coast away in the distance. We check the Northern Lights forecast and if favourable, and the sky is clear, we look out for the lights at the farm or go on a hunt!
Day 4 – Ride a.m. & Whale Watching p.m.
Hack away from the farm through meadow trails, lava fields and across a small river. Farmland gradually gives way to volcanic mountains and we call in at a remote farm for a warm-up and light lunch. In the afternoon transfer to the old harbour in Reykjavik for a 3 hour whale-watching cruise in Faxaflói Bay. This is one of the best places in Europe to see whales, and as a bonus you get stunning views of Reykjavik and the mountains surrounding the capital. Return to the farm for dinner. We check the Northern Lights forecast and if favourable, and the sky is clear, we look out for the lights at the farm or go on a hunt!
Day 5 – Siggi & the River Banks
Siggi is the term used for the trails across our farm and the neighbour’s land. Depending on the weather and wind, we will ride for 2 hours through the surrounding areas. After a light lunch, and fresh horses, we follow the River Gljúfurá to the confluence with the mighty glacial river Ölfusá. From here you have a grand view of the famous volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull rising behind the icy rivers (weather permitting!). Upon your return to the farm, dinner will be served.
Day 6 – Ingólfstrail & Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir
This morning’s trail follows in the footsteps of the first settler Ingólfur Arnarsson, who settled in Iceland in the 9th century at the foot of the table mountain Ingólfsfjall. Return to the farm for lunch and after checking-out drive to the Golden Waterfall, Iceland’s iconic geyser, Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park. Drive back to Reykjavík to arrive around 18:00 for onward travel or an overnight stay in the capital.
The accommodation is in the farm’s guesthouse in 2, 3 or 4-bed rooms.
Facilities are shared.
This ride is weather-dependant: sightings of the northern lights are not guaranteed.
Dinner on the last day and accommodation in Reykjavik are not included in the price.
