Mantaraya Lodge

Mantaraya Lodge

This lovely little family-managed seaside lodge is within the Machalilla National Park in the province of Manabi, just 5 minutes’ drive from Puerto López, Ecuador. The nearby beach is glorious golden sand and popular with the local surfing crowd as well as beach-lovers. This is NOT a beach-front hotel.

Mantaraya Lodge has just 15 rooms decorated to create a pleasant seaside atmosphere. All rooms offer a private bathroom, air conditioning, a balcony (or panoramic windows) to enjoy the evening sun, delicious sea breeze or perhaps a tropical drink while watching the view over the endless Pacific.

The BIG marine attraction of this area are the giant Manta Rays which are pelagic (“oceangoing”) and migrate through these waters between January to April each year. They travel between the Ecuador coast and the Galapagos Islands, and maybe further afield – it isn’t known for sure. The diving is excellent throughout the year but the rays are the headline-grabbers, and with a 9m wingspan, they are a memorable encounter.

Between June and October Humpback whales visit Isla de la Plata (just off shore) to calve. The cows come to this spot from the cold Atlantic to give birth because the calves have to be born in warm water (they are born without a thick layer of blubber). Adults are 12 to 15 m long and weigh around 30 tonnes, and of all the whale species Humpbacks are the most acrobatic and breach frequently. Whale numbers in SE Pacific are slowly recovering
